There are actually over 350 student-musicians in The Marching Virginians.
The Marching Virginians march 13 different instruments: piccolos, clarinets, alto and tenor saxes, trumpets, mellophones, trombones, baritones, sousaphones, and 4 types of percussion instruments. We also feature a flag corps, twirlers, and 2 drum majors.
The MVs will march over 65,000 miles in any season, the equivalent of three times around the world.
The Marching Virginians rehearse 90 minutes each weekday with occasional additional weekend rehearsals in order to prepare a different show for each home performance.
The Marching Virginians have supported the football team in post-season play and have traveled across the United States to perform in different bowl games.
Members of the MVs are from 22 states across the U.S. and are from as far west as Washington State.
Daily operations are managed by a student staff selected by the band leadership.
Leadership positions in the MVs are taken very seriously; section leaders and rank captains play a large role in determining who makes the band and lead sectionals throughout the season.
The library staff prepares and electronically distributes music for The Marching Virginians, saving the organization more than 15,000 pieces of paper over the course of one season.
The managers are a unique 15-member section in the MVs. They help with behind the scenes organization of the band.
Kappa Kappa Psi (ΚΚΨ) and Tau Beta Sigma (ΤΒΣ), respectively the Honorary Band Service Fraternity and Sorority, serve the bands at Tech by providing meals, sponsoring events and more!
Dr. Polly Middleton is the fifth director of The Marching Virginians and Mr. Chad Reep is the tenth assistant director.
David McKee, fourth director of The Marching Virginians, was immortalized with his very own "bobble head" character - TWICE!
