The End of an Era: UVA Game Recap

When I signed up to write the blog post for the UVA game, I had hoped that it would be a triumphant post about our victory over the Wahoos, our plans to travel to the ACC Championship in Charlotte, and our win streak becoming old enough to get its license.

What I didn’t expect was a post about an anxiety-inducing game with crazy ups and downs, a devastating loss more painful than any loss this season, and a sad trek through the celebrating UVA fans, back to the busses to return home—sans Commonwealth Cup.

Some time has passed since the game, and I think that most of us have gotten over our initial shock and horror at the final score. But even still—every time I close my eyes, I see Hendon Hooker being sacked in our endzone, the football rolling between his feet. I see the stampede of UVA students vaulting over the rails and swarming the center of Scott Stadium. And I feel the weight of the shocking loss settling in the chests of Hokies everywhere.

Needless to say, we aren’t taking this loss lightly.

Even though the game was difficult to watch and ultimately devastating, no one could say that The Marching Virginians didn’t show up with spirit and Hokie pride and give it our absolute all.

Playing any chance we could, leading all of the VT fans in the Let’s Go Hokies chant, and putting on brave faces, even when the scores switched out of our favor, the MVs helped bring a little piece of home to Charlottesville, even when things got rough. We supported the team to the best of our ability, and we know they appreciate the sound and energy that we brought to the stadium.

Friday’s game may have been a sad one, but the MVs are proud to say that we show up for the Hokies rain or shine (see our post about the Pitt game), standard game time or 6OT (see our post about the UNC game), and most importantly, win or lose.

Now, the MVs are getting prepared to travel to the bowl game later this month! We find out which bowl we’ll be attending next weekend, so stay tuned!

Our loss against UVA might mean the end of a 15-year long era, but it’s not the end of the world. If anything, it’s fuel for the Hokies to come back with a vengeance next year when the Wahoos venture down to our territory with the Commonwealth Cup in tow. We might still be mourning our loss from Friday, but we’re more fired up than ever to start a new streak next year and bring our cup back home.
